KleeneStar 0.0.3‑alpha – Commit-based Versioning

Tracking the origin of data changes is often a major challenge in complex projects. In dynamic work environments, adjustments to objects are inevitable, yet the uncertainty about who changed a value, when, and why often leads to inefficiency or, in the worst case, data loss. We are introducing a solution that fundamentally solves this problem.

The centerpiece of this innovation is the commit-based object history. Inspired by modern version control systems from software development, KleeneStar stores every change to an object as a discrete commit. Instead of simply overwriting existing values in the database, only the difference from the previous state is captured during each mutation. This delta storage ensures that the history remains extremely compact while precisely documenting every single field change.

To ensure maximum performance, KleeneStar utilizes a dual architecture. While the history runs in the background as a seamless chain, the current state is maintained in an optimized Value table. This serves as an accelerated read cache, ensuring that search and filter operations are completed in milliseconds, regardless of how many changes an object has undergone over the years. If a user wishes to view a past state, the system simply replays the commit chain from the moment of creation up to the desired date, thereby reconstructing the exact snapshot of the object.

Access to this "time machine" is seamlessly integrated into the user interface. The history can be opened in a central modal via an object's context menu. All changes are listed chronologically and presented in an intuitive diff view that directly contrasts the old and new values. The integrated restore function is particularly powerful; if an error occurs, an object can be reset to a previous state with a single click. For audit purposes, the past is never deleted. Instead, the system creates a new commit that applies the necessary corrections to restore the previous state. This keeps the audit trail seamless and tamper-proof.

Since we are still in an early stage of development with KleeneStar 0.0.3-alpha, we view this approach to versioning as a shared journey that we want to shape together with you. We don't want to make these decisions in isolation; instead, we warmly invite you all to critically question this technical path and engage in a dialogue with us. Whether you are a developer, a data enthusiast, or simply a power user, your feedback is incredibly valuable to us. We want to know if this hybrid approach of a read cache and an event chain meets your expectations or where you see potential for optimization. Join the discussion, share your ideas, and help us lay a foundation that is truly scalable and future-proof. We look forward to your thoughts and to continuing the development of KleeneStar together with you.
